Parable of the Brambles

World Council of Churches, 2016

Painted in-residence at a week-long meeting of the World Council of Churches, these three paintings give in deliberately local perspective on Jesus.

Jesus told the “Parable of the Mustard Seed” to describe the Kingdom of God. Mustard was considered a weed by gardeners in Jesus’ day. It’s an invasive plant, that comes in uninvited and spreads quickly. We don’t have wild mustard in Scottish gardens, we have brambles sneaking in, being thorny and fruitful.
